Stanley Hauerwas

Theologian & Ethicist

Stanley Hauerwas (born July 24, 1940) is the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor Emeritus of Divinity and Law at Duke Divinity School, where he taught from 1984 until his retirement. He previously taught at the University of Notre Dame and was named "America's best theologian" by Time magazine in 2001.

Although he comes from the Methodist tradition and is influenced by Mennonite ethics (especially John Howard Yoder), Hauerwas's communitarian and pacifist theology has shaped a wide swath of evangelical thinking about the church as polis, the formation of Christian character, and Christian witness in a post-Christendom culture. His co-authored Resident Aliens (with Will Willimon) is one of the most-read books on the post-Christendom church.
