Robert Webber

Theologian of Worship (1933-2007)

Robert Eugene Webber (1933-2007) was an American theologian known for his work on Christian worship and the early church. He spent much of his career as professor of theology at Wheaton College (1968-2000) and later as the Myers Professor of Ministry at Northern Seminary in Lombard, Illinois. He also founded and served as president of the Institute for Worship Studies in Orange Park, Florida (now The Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies).

Webber wrote more than forty books and is best known for the Ancient-Future series, which argues that recovering practices from the early and patristic church—creedal confession, the church year, the Eucharist, embodied liturgy—is essential for the witness of evangelical Christianity in a postmodern age. He played a key role in the Convergence Movement, blending evangelical, charismatic, and liturgical streams of worship.
